Twelve Nights Through Rome, Lake Como and Paris
Three very different tempos in one trip. A city that rewards early mornings, a lake that rewards doing very little, and a capital that rewards knowing where to eat before you arrive.
What this document is, and what it is not
This is an illustrative sample. It is not a quote, a held booking, or an offer. Every property named here is one I can book through my affiliation with Fora Travel, but availability, rates, room categories and any partner benefits vary by property, date and rate, and are confirmed only at the time of booking. No pricing appears anywhere in this document on purpose. Your real itinerary would be built around your dates, your pace and your budget, and would look different from this one.
How the nights are shaped
Rome
Arrival and the densest history on the route, while energy is highest.
Lake Como
Three and a half hours by rail. The pace drops on purpose.
Paris
Direct from Milan. The trip ends on a city, not a transfer.
You can book your own flights and still have them in here
Plenty of travelers book their own flights, whether for miles, status, or a fare they already found. That does not put your flights outside the itinerary.
I add your flights myself, and the itinerary pulls in live flight information. If a schedule changes after it is built, the itinerary reflects the change without me having to rebuild it. Everyone traveling sees one document with everything in it, whether I booked that piece or you did.
- You book your own long haul flights if you prefer
- I add them so they sit alongside the hotels and transfers
- I book the internal legs, or you can, and either way they appear here
- Optional. A car from your front door to the departure airport, and one waiting when you land back home
Door to door, if you want it. Most itineraries start at the arrivals hall. This one can start at your driveway. I can arrange a private car from your home to the departure airport, timed to your flight rather than to a guess, and a second car waiting for the return. It is an add on rather than part of the base trip, and I quote it separately so you can take it or leave it.
For hotels, I can send options as a live proposal rather than a flat list. You see current rates, compare the choices side by side, and book the one you want when you are ready. Nothing is held until you decide.
The itinerary in detail
Rome
- Where you stay. Hotel Eden, Dorchester Collection, above the Spanish Steps with a rooftop that earns its reputation. Hotel Principe di Savoia is the comparable grande dame if you would rather be in Milan for the front half instead.
- Getting in. Private transfer from Fiumicino. After a transatlantic flight this is the one transfer I never recommend skipping.
- Getting around. Rome is walked. I would hold a car only for the day you go outside the centre.
- Day one. Deliberately unstructured. A neighbourhood walk and an early dinner. Jet lag from the United States is real and a packed first day usually gets abandoned.
- What I would arrange. The Vatican before general opening, with a guide who can move. One long lunch in Testaccio rather than another monument. A booked table for one significant dinner rather than several.
- What I would not. A day trip to Pompeii on this routing. It is a full day each way and Rome deserves the time more.
Lake Como
- Where you stay. Grand Hotel Tremezzo, on the water facing Bellagio, with the floating pool. It is the reason people come back to this lake.
- Getting there. High speed rail Rome to Milan, then a private car to Tremezzina. I book the rail seats and the driver so the handoff is not your problem.
- Getting around. Public ferries between the villages, which are genuinely pleasant, plus a private boat for one afternoon.
- What I would arrange. A morning at Villa Carlotta before the coaches. A boat to Varenna for lunch. Otherwise very little, on purpose.
- Pace note. Four nights here is the point of the trip. Two would make it a stopover.
Paris
- Where you stay. Le Meurice, facing the Tuileries, or Hôtel Plaza Athénée on Avenue Montaigne if you want the more theatrical version. Both are Dorchester Collection.
- Getting there. Direct flight Milan to Paris, roughly ninety minutes, or high speed rail if you would rather stay on the ground.
- Getting around. Metro and walking. A car in central Paris is mostly a liability.
- What I would arrange. One museum properly rather than three badly. A market morning. Restaurant bookings well in advance, because the places worth eating at do not take walk ins.
- The departure. A late flight home means the final day is still a real day. I arrange a late checkout so it is usable.
What I handle on a trip like this
Where a property participates in a preferred partner program through Fora, benefits such as breakfast, a room upgrade when available, a property credit, or early check in and late checkout may apply. These vary by property, rate and date, and I confirm what applies to your specific booking before you commit to anything.
Tell me your dates and I will build the real one
Give me your window and how you like to travel. I will come back with a routing that fits, and tell you plainly what I would cut.
